EXCLUSIVE: Anees Bazmee opens up about how he has stayed relevant after 30 years in the film industry
Filmmaker Anees Bazmee is one of Hindi cinema’s success stories. Having delivered blockbusters like Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, No Entry, Welcome, Welcome Back and Singh Is King, his films were synonymous with family entertainment, ensuring that top stars flock to his projects. EXCLUSIVE Anees Bazmee opens up about how he has stayed relevant after 30 years in the film industry Anees Bazmee, who is currently busy with the shooting of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, is also gearing up for his next directorial Pagalpanti. In the meantime, he is also set to start mentoring young and aspiring writers. He began his journey in the tinsel town as a film writer. The director has written some of David Dhawan’s most successful films- like Deewana Mastana, Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhen, Raja Babu or Mujhse Shaadi Karogi among others. Anees Bazmee says it doesn't feel like he has completed 30 years in the industry. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Bazmee revealed. "You know, I still can't believe it. The terms like 30 years, 40 years I only get to know when someone informs me that. I will be very honest with you, I feel like I have only completed 6 - 8 months only. I have these posters and banners put up in my office and I see and sometimes wonder 'Yeh picture kab lagi thi?' And I don't even watch my films. Sometimes, if it's on TV or something but I don't watch my films after it's done. Whatever films I have written or directed, I try to not watch it after it releases. Because subconsciously, you end up thinking about the good and bad parts about it. So, what I do or write, I don't watch and I don't remember also. I like to think about new stuff and what new can be done. " "Even now, I get nervous when I start to write a film. I wonder what if I won't be able to write it, I have written so many but I won't be able to do it. Then, I try to console myself. Even now, when it's the first day of the direction, I get very nervous. So that nervousness, anxiety, and excitement - this isn't made up, this all is there," he said. "With films, you can't be sure that it will work 100 percent. It is just your experience and involvement like 'Yeah! This is good.' We can't be sure before Friday what will happen. But, yeah, there's some grammar and to learn it takes a lot of time. When you understand it, then the maximum time it works. There's this saying that when you understand the pulse of the audience, you get to know what might work. After writing so many films and having so many young people on board, I don't like to keep the communication gap. I write a lot of stuff and read a lot. Even the seventh assistant should come to me and say that 'Sir, this doesn't seem alright.' I feel like it is not easy to stay relevant for a long period of time. It requires constant effort for reinvention," he said when asked about how he has managed to stay relevant after 30 years. Coming back to his upcoming projects, Anees Bazmee is gearing up for his next release Pagalpanti which stars an ensemble of John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Pulkit Samrat, Ileana D'Cruz, Urvashi Rautela, Kriti Kharbanda, and Saurabh Shukla. The film is releasing on November 22, 2019. Besides this, he is also helming Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 starring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani. It is slated for 2020 release.
